Journalists declared tougher agitation from October 7

Journalists have declared fresh agitation programme from October 7 onwards, including a grand rally, to press home their demand to the arrests of the killers of journalist couple Sagar-Runi.

Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), made the announcement from a rally on the Jatiya Press Club premises on Wednesday.

According to the declaration, journalists from across the country will hold a grand rally on October 15 as part of their tougher agitation if the government fails in their investigation into the murder of journalist couple.

The leaders of different journalists' unions will also hold a view-exchange meeting on October 7 and a memorial meeting on October 11 at Jatiya Press Club, marking the 8th month since the couple were found murdered.

“This time, our agitation programme will be so hard-hitting that repetitions of incidents of abuse against journalist will cease,” said the BFUJ president.

The fresh agitation programme was declared in a context when Home Minister MK Alamgir on Tuesday assured that the motive behind the killing of journalist couple Sagar-Runi would be unveiled by October 10.

"By October 10, hopefully, we will be able to comment on the exact progress in this regard, or on those who we are going to identify as the criminals," the newly-appointed minister said.

Addressing the minister’s remark in his speech on Wednesday, DRU President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha said, “We will gather reporters from all over the country to put the capital into an impasse if the government fails to give out details of the journalist couple’s killer(s) by October 10.”

Different journalists' organisations including The Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Jatiya Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) participated in Wednesday’s rally that began around 12noon.

Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were found murdered in their West Rajabazar residence on February 11.

Earlier on September 5, the journalists issued a 20-day ultimatum to the government to properly conduct an investigation, which expired today.

Previously the journalists' leaders also demanded arrest of ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman for his “alleged involvement” in the murder.

On May 30, Mahfuzur, at a press briefing in London, claimed to have video footage that hinted at the motive behind the murder.

On Tuesday, Rab interrogated ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman at its headquarters for two hours concerning the statement he made at a London press conference on Sagar and Runi.
